｜｜Story ：お煤払いと灯火の癒し｜｜

日本では794年ごろから伝わる”お煤払い”という習慣があります。その頃宮中では新しい年に歳神様をお迎えするために、歳末に行燈などの煤をお掃除していました。日本で使われてきた灯油は植物性でしたので、その煤も石油と違ってサラサラとしており、掃けば簡単に落とすことができます。のちに仏教寺にも植物性の蝋燭*として広がり、12月13日のお煤払いとして今も風物行事の伝統が続いております。一般家庭においてもその概念は「年の瀬の大掃除」として日常の風景となっています。
*和蝋燭とは元々仏教とともに日本に伝わった蜜蝋燭を植物性の原料で独自に造るようになった日本の品物です。

香原料については、安政の時代（1850年代後期）より続くメーカーの製造した香原料を購入されている大阪のいつき様より仕入れました。お香の原料は漢方薬の原料と同じ物も多く、古くから問屋様が経験を積んだ確かな目利きで厳選し輸入しています。

｜｜Story: Osusu Barai and the healing of light｜｜
In Japan, there is a custom called “Osusu Barai” that has been passed down since around 794. At that time, the imperial court would clean the soot from lanterns and other items at the end of the year to welcome the New Year's God. The kerosene used in Japan was plant-based, so the soot was smooth, unlike paraffin, and could be easily removed by sweeping. Later, it spread to Buddhist temples as a plant-based candle*, and the tradition of soot removal continues to this day as a seasonal event on December 13th. In ordinary households, the concept has become a daily scene as the “end of the year cleaning”. *Japanese candles are Japanese products that are made from beeswax candles, which were originally brought to Japan with Buddhism, and are now made independently from plant-based ingredients.
